How to clean a car headliner
without making it sag.
Coffee splash, greasy handprints, smoke film or a water stain over the back seat. The headliner is the one part of the interior most people are scared to touch, and for good reason. Here is how to clean a car headliner the safe way, the way we do it on driveways around Waxhaw and South Charlotte.
Know this first
Why headliners sag when you clean them
Most headliners are a thin layer of fabric glued to a foam backing, which is glued to a rigid board. Over the years, summer heat already weakens that adhesive. When you soak the fabric or scrub hard, water and friction finish the job, and the fabric pulls away from the board. Once it sags, cleaning won’t fix it. It has to be re-glued or replaced.
That’s why the rule for headliners is simple: as little moisture as possible, as little pressure as possible.
Before you start
What you need
Two or three clean microfiber towels
Soft, short-pile towels. One for cleaning, one for blotting dry.
A gentle upholstery or interior cleaner
Look for one that’s safe on fabric and low-foaming. Dilute it if the label allows. No harsh degreasers or bleach.
A soft detailing brush
A soft horsehair-style brush for lifting dirt out of the weave without fuzzing the fabric.
A vacuum with a soft brush attachment
Optional, but it removes loose dust before any liquid touches the fabric.
Step by step
How to clean a car headliner
- Vacuum lightlyUse the soft brush attachment and barely touch the fabric. You’re just pulling off loose dust.
- Spray the towel, not the headlinerMist a small amount of cleaner onto a folded microfiber towel. Spraying the roof directly soaks the glue.
- Blot one small sectionPress the towel into the stain and lift. Work from the outside of the spot toward the middle so it doesn’t spread.
- Brush gently if neededFor dirt in the weave, lightly work the area with a soft brush in one direction. No circles, no pressure.
- Blot dry right awayUse a clean, dry towel to pull out the moisture. The faster it dries, the safer the glue.
- Let it air outLeave the windows down or doors open for an hour or two. Don’t blast it with a heat gun.

The hard ones
Tough headliner stains
Makeup, grease and handprints
Repeat the blot step a few times with fresh cleaner on the towel instead of pushing harder. Patience beats pressure.
Smoke film
Cigarette smoke leaves a yellow film across the whole headliner, not just one spot. It usually takes a full, even cleaning so you don’t end up with a clean patch in a yellow roof. Our guide on getting smoke smell out of a car covers the rest of the cabin.
Water stains and rings
A brown ring usually means water got in from above. Check the sunroof drains, door seals and roof rack mounts first. Clean the stain only after the leak is fixed, or it’ll come right back.
About steam: Steam can lift stains with very little liquid, which is why we use it on a lot of interiors. On a headliner, though, heat plus moisture is exactly what loosens the glue. Unless you’re experienced, keep steam off the roof and use it on seats and carpet instead. More on that in our steam cleaning page.
Don’t do this
Headliner mistakes that cause sagging
- Spraying cleaner directly on the roofIt soaks through to the glue faster than you think.
- Scrubbing in circlesIt frays the fabric and pulls it away from the foam.
- Using a carpet extractor or wet-vacGreat for floors, too much water for a headliner.
- Harsh chemicalsDegreasers and bleach can discolor the fabric and break down the adhesive.
Spray the towel.
Never the roof.

Quick answers
Can I use a magic eraser on my headliner?
We don’t recommend it. Melamine sponges are mildly abrasive and can fuzz or thin the fabric. Stick to a microfiber towel and a gentle upholstery cleaner.
Can you fix a sagging headliner by cleaning it?
No. Sagging means the glue has let go. It needs to be re-glued or replaced by an upholstery shop. Cleaning carefully just helps keep it from happening.
How long does a headliner take to dry?
If you only dampen it, usually an hour or two with the windows down. If it takes much longer, you used too much liquid.
